Important Security Notice: Protect Your Firewall from Increased Brute Force Attacks

Written by Logically | Dec 20, 2024 7:22:47 PM

At Logically, we’re always monitoring emerging cybersecurity threats to help keep your business safe. Right now, there’s been a significant increase in brute force attacks targeting firewalls across multiple industries. These attacks are attempts to guess login credentials by trying combinations over and over again. The goal? To get unauthorized access to your systems and compromise your data.

The most common point of entry for these attacks? Open ports for secure remote access, like SSL VPNs. While we haven’t seen any successful attacks against your company’s accounts, we wanted to share this information so you can take steps to protect your infrastructure.

So, what can you do to protect your network from these brute force attacks? Here are a few key security measures you should consider:

  1. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Multi-factor authentication adds an extra layer of protection, even if an attacker has your password. It's a simple, highly effective way to keep unauthorized users out.
  2. Implement Geo-IP Filtering
This technique blocks access from regions with a high rate of cybercrime. If your business doesn’t require international access, limiting connections to the U.S. only can significantly reduce your attack surface.
  3. Restrict Access to Trusted IPs
If possible, lock down your firewall and network access to a set list of trusted IP addresses. This is one of the best defenses against brute force and password spraying attacks. While this is highly effective, it’s more difficult to implement if you have remote workers without static public IPs.
